The Book Thief Shows Us The Power of Language

A new movie, called The Book Thief, based on a best-selling novel, written my Markus Zusak, is going to hit the theaters this January. It tells the story of a girl named Liesel, who at the devastating times of the Second World War, in the Nazi Germany, finds relief by stealing books.

Being an orphan, Liesel is adopted by a relatively poor family that has a special secret. They hide a Jewish young boy under the stairs of their house, to keep him safe and protected from the Nazi. The young girl cannot read so she starts to learn how to do it, with the help of her foster dad, Hans. The stolen books become a real strong connection between Liesel and Max, the Jewish boy. They discover the power of language as a triumph against the unfair world they live in.

The Book Thief trailer shows how Liesel steals a book that survived the fire of a Nazi book burning ceremony. This lovely character has blond hair and blue eyes that make her look so fragile but she shows a totally different side of her, as she is courageous and powerful. The character of Liesel, teaches us that being brave and not letting anyone drag you down is a must in life.

The Book Thief brings out many different characters that are full of strength and kindness, even if the world around them goes crazy. Hans and Rosa are the foster parents of Liesel. The fact that they are one of the few families of Germany, who risked it all by protecting a Jewish young boy, makes them really special and their attitude shows that good can be brought out of the bad, through tolerance and good will.

The Book Thief is adapted by Michael Petroni and directed by the very talented Brian Percival. The movie has an absolutely amazing cast, starring the fresh actress Sophie Nelisse, playing Liesel, the Academy Award Winner Geoffrey Rush as Hans and the Academy Award Nominee Emily Watson as Rosa. Enjoy the movie and try to understand that the power of words was capable of keeping the hope alive, even during one of the worst periods of our history.
